On Thursday, March 22nd, the City of Mission hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for Bentsen Palm Park. The 67acre Park, located on south Inspiration Road, north of the State Veterans Cemetery is scheduled to open in October 2007 at a cost of $1.1 million. Once open, the Park will be the largest in the Mission Parks Department and offer the greatest amount of recreational amenities for Mission residents. The following recreational amenities will be included at the Park,
* 15 picnic shelters
* 2 tennis courts
* 4 baseball fields
* 4 basket ball courts
* 2 soccer/football fields
* 2 acre pond with pier
* 2 acre Frisbee golf field
* 2 acre area for youth soccer
* 2 mile walking trails
* 5 shuffleboard courts
* 2 sand volleyball courts
* 6 horseshoe pitching fields
* 2 playgrounds
* 13 acre bird watching area
In addition, the Park will include a concession stand with restroom, 2 additional restrooms, and sprinkler system for the entire park and over 400 parking places.
The total project is $1.1 million. In 2003, the City was awarded a $500000 grant from the Texas Park & Wildlife Department for Bentsen Palm Park. Bond monies dedicated for the park project ($500,000) and park zone dedication money ($100,000) will fund the remaining cost of the project. The 67 acres of parkland was donated to the City
